Hoarding, a national epedemic

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3)
"Hoarders" it's a popular television show, but experts say the act of hoarding is growing, especially in the Midwest.

The host of the show "Hoarders" is in Kalamazoo this week training people to deal with these situations.

On the show we see stories of people with more than 2,000 rats living in their homes or every room filled to the ceiling with garbage.

It can seem extreme, but many people are living with their own hoarding situations.

Matt Paxton is the host of the show. He travels the country teaching both cleaning professionals and mental health leaders about the disorder and how to help people.

This week he's in Kalamazoo Michigan. He tells us hoarding is more prevalent in this area because people tend to live in their homes longer and inherit family homes.

15 million people in the U.S. are affected by hoarding, which is now a classified disorder with the American Psychiatric Association. Clearwater, FL has a high percentage due to the elderly and aging population.

Paxton tells us hoarding usually begins after a traumatic life event.
